as a filler because i got my basic english credits out of the way in high school. i am going to have to read a lot of african american literature. i am in no way racist. and i think that writing about what defines you as a person and being in touch with your roots are great things. but to be completely honest, i really couldnt care less about reading about someone else’s oppression. i do not feel that just because a book was written about slavery or by a slave or by the grandchild of a slave that that book should be declared a “classic.” let’s be real here, to me and probably all of my middle class white classmates, reading about someone that went through that oppression is something that we cannot relate to or appreciate. stick an oprah booklist stamp on it, shit’s done.

I think she’s missing the point of a cultural lit class.

So, which country did your great great grandparents move from?
